Support Services
The Counsellors are an integral part of a pastoral care network at the school. They are the core aspect of ensuring that students have equality of educational opportunity, by assisting students to deal with issues which may act as barriers to their learning. They fulfil this function in a number of ways, including one to one counselling, small group and whole class facilitation, family counselling and referral to outside agencies. Support Services Mission Statement
We provide a quality, confidential service that equips and empowers students, staff and the wider school community, within a supportive and caring environment. The dignity and autonomy of every individual is paramount to us. Our service includes: social education and training, liaison, advocacy, assistance with interpersonal relationships and personal issues, individual needs and assisting the students' transition from school into the community. Appointments System
Students can make appointments by filling out the appropriate slip and putting it into the post box in the Waiting Room. We try to see the students within 2 days of receiving their request. If it is urgent or a student is in crisis we make arrangements so that the student can wait, their privacy is maintained by providing a quiet place until they can be seen. Referrals
Staff can make referrals at anytime on the appropriate form, however we do ask them to seek the student or parent's permission, this is not mandatory. However, students permission is. Self Referral: Approximately 90% of our referrals come from the students themselves. Parents refer their children to us and most often these results in an outside referral. Referrals to outside agencies occur when necessary. The counsellors are responsible for this.
Support for Parents
This is a new development from Northcote College Support Services Department. Being a parent of a teenager can be demanding. We are offering our expertise to support parents and caregivers of Northcote College. New dedicated email ( parentsupport@northcote.school.nz ) and voicemail (4810141 extension 830) addresses have been established for initial contact. Please leave your name and that of your Northcote College student and some indication of the issues. One of the school counsellors will contact you and we will endeavour to provide an appropriate support structure for you. This could take the form of group workshops, referral to other providers, one to one sessions or other approaches dependent on needs. This service is free of charge. |
