Board of Trustees Candidates

Todd BARTLETT (Sitting Member)
As a parent of two daughters (Tegan - Year 13 and Madison - Year 11), my two years on the board as a co-opted Maori Representative have been both challenging and rewarding.  I believe effectiveness in the role develops over time and I am keen to continue to serve on the board.
I am confident the school is heading in the right direction under the leadership of Vickie BARRIE.
I have enjoyed the diversity of background and positive and constructive manner in which the board operates.
I am a Detective Sergeant and have been a police officer for 25 years bringing practical, strategic and logistical skills to the board

Terry DONNELLY (Sitting Chairperson)
I have served on the board for five years. I have two children at school and two who have already left Northcote. We currently have a very good management team running the school and the college is evolving steadily. We are developing systems for evaluating student progress and more immediate means of communicating this information to parents. Along side these improvements the management team have made the self appraisal and performance appraisal of teaching staff a more structured and effective process. This gives the board confidence that Northcote College is in good health. The board as a whole recognize and value what Northcote offers students. We have a balanced co ed public school which sets high academic standards and also integrates special needs classes and does not stream. It contains a wide range of cultures and fosters good social and emotional development of students. I find serving on the board a positive and fulfilling role.

Steve DWYER (Sitting Member)
I am a parent of two children who enjoy attending Northcote College. I am a director of a structural engineering consultancy which has been in business for 17 years. My wife is an enthusiastic teacher who provides insight into the inner workings of our education system. I believe strongly in working with school staff, management and the board to offer the students a productive and enjoyable experience during their time at Northcote College.
I was co-opted to the Board of Trustees in November 2009. The initial period on the board has been very enlightening. The school staff, management and the board are functioning in an effective and co-operative manner and it has been enjoyable being a part of the team. This experience has provided a better insight into the efforts made by Northcote College to cater for the diverse needs of the students and I would like to see this good work continue.

Mark KATTERNS, Hawkins Construction - Project Director   (Sitting Member)
Kia ora,
I am Mark, a husband, a father of five and a grandfather of three.
We have our youngest boy Stephen in his last year at Northcote College and we are very proud of his achievements.  The school has been extremely supportive and in return; above my role as a Supporting Trustee member, I am very enthusiastic to stand as a member and represent the Board of Trustees.
Our youngest (Erica) has just started and we are excited to have both our children at Northcote College.
Pauline and I have raised our children in this community and have actively supported our community through work initiatives helping ‘at risk youth’ into work.
For the past 32 years with Hawkins, I have been responsible for the procurement, construction and delivery of multi million dollar projects for our clients.
I have excellent motivation, communication and planning skills and offer these to the Board.

Christine KEMPKERS (Sitting Member)
I was co-opted onto the Board at Northcote College at the end of 2009, and have previously served 6 years on the Board at Northcote Intermediate. I have found the role to be both interesting and rewarding, and I have enjoyed being able to be involved in my children’s education in this way.
I am married with 3 children, the older two are now at university, and our son is in year 11. I am a secondary teacher, and as such I am very interested in ensuring our young people get the very best educational opportunities possible. I would like to be able to continue to contribute to Northcote College as a Board member in the future.

Peter LEE
With two daughters at the College, I have a keen interest and commitment to helping the school succeed. I have 14 years experience at board level on a number of community organisations including as a former school board trustee. I also bring over 26 years’ successful experience in business, both running my own company and at senior management level for major corporates.
My experience includes:
•    Previous school board involvement. I was a board member of Willow Park Primary’s BOT from 2004 to 2007. On the board I drove two initiatives: a school uniform survey and a community survey- with close consultation with school management and parents.
•    14 Years’ involvement at committee/board level with several conservation groups. I am currently Chairperson of the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi, a large and successful community conservation organisation. I have also been a trustee of the Motuhuie Trust and I co-founded the Auckland Conservation Forum.
•    Significant marketing and communication experience. I am national marketing manager for Fidelity Life, a growing investment and insurance company.
•    Business skills – I ran my own strategy and marketing consultancy for over 3 years with clients including major companies.
If elected I would bring:
•    A clear understanding of the respective roles of the Board (governance) and the school management (management).
•    Marketing & communication skills – particularly the importance of good communication
•    Business management skills – currently am responsible for a 7 figure marketing budget
•    Leadership skills – I have current staff responsibilities, and further skills through my chairmanship of the Tiritiri Supporters.
I have the community experience and business management skills to help the College develop still further, taking a stewardship role in making wise use of its resources. I am keen to see communications expand further, such as the school website, and to develop ‘locally-raised funds’ initiatives.

Margot RICHMOND (Sitting Member)
I have lived and worked in the Northcote/Birkenhead area for the past twenty years and have been a board member at Northcote College for the past three years.
I have had three children attend Northcote College, two of whom have now left and Elliot is in year 12. I also work as a practice nurse for my husband John in Birkenhead.
I have really enjoyed my role as deputy chairperson on the board at Northcote and feel I can contribute as an active member of the local community with experience in most aspects of college life as both a parent and board member. I thoroughly enjoy being involved with teenagers and their associated challenges and have enormous respect for Northcote College and what it has to offer students.
I feel the college is a great asset to our community and would be proud to continue on the board and be a part of its future development.

Carolyn SEALES
I am a mother of a Northcote student in year 12. I have worked for many years as a Teachers Aide in the Birkdale community and I am currently studying at Auckland University in my 3rd year to become a Primary School Teacher.
As part of my studies I have looked at the BOT’s and their role in schools and have been intrigued.
I would love to have this opportunity to join a Board of Trustees to gain experience that can only be received through such a position, and would relish the opportunity to be involved in my daughter’s school.

My whanau and I moved from Kaitaia four years ago for education and employment opportunities. I am currently in my final year of my Bachelor of Health Science degree studying at AUT on the North Shore Campus. We have three children, Winton our eldest is currently a pupil at Northcote College. We are very privileged that Winton is part of the Whanau class at Northcote College. We believe this class offers an abundance of opportunities for Winton to succeed and achieve through education in a safe learning environment. Winton’s father and I have invested interest for our son to achieve to his fullest potential in his education and will support and encourage him in whatever he chooses.
I would like to become actively involved in the education of my children as I strongly believe that education is very powerful, without education and involvement as willing parents in most cases our children become misplaced in the system. I also believe that children thrive best when their parents are dynamically involved. By doing this we as parents can make a positive difference in our children’s learning.
I have been involved as a board member at Onepoto Primary School (Winton’s previous primary school) the last term as the Secretary and the final year as an active parent due to the demands on my family. I believe we need a board that best represents the demographics of Northcote College given fair representation of the diverseness of our community.
