Congratulations to Biology teacher Dr Kit Hustler and his student team who have won a Waicare Award, gaining first place in the Innovative project/programme category.

The Le Roys Bush/Little Shoal Bay volunteer care group had funding for fish monitoring, Northcote College teacher Kit Hustler was keen to break out of the classroom and make science alive for his students and a fruitful relationship was born!

Since early 2009, Kit and a crew of keen students have:

▪  monitored the population of mosquito fish, gaining an idea of breeding cycles that can inform effective strategies for their management

▪  established a wiki to input and share data with the wider community

▪  broadened their research and monitoring to native fish populations, uncovering previously unidentified species in the stream

▪  established a native fish aquarium at school as an educational tool

▪  gained media coverage for their research through newspaper stories, presentations to the wider community including to the local MP, Jonathan Coleman and the Minister of Conservation, journal articles and TV3’s secondary school sustainability challenge
