The Career Education Benchmarks are a suite of self-review tools designed to raise the quality of career education in New Zealand.
The ultimate aim of career education and guidance is to equip students to develop their careers throughout their lives.
Teaching students an identified set of understanding, skills and attitudes - career management competencies – helps them achieve their life, learning and work goals.
The competencies, which are based on international research and practice, are grouped into three areas:
- developing self-awareness – competencies that enable young people to understand themselves and the influences on them
- exploring opportunities – competencies that enable young people to investigate opportunities in learning and work
- deciding and acting – competencies that enable young people to make and adjust their plans, to manage change and transition, and take appropriate action.
In order to assess our effectiveness in allowing student development in the above areas we are looking at three aspects of current career education practice at Northcote College – Programmes and Services, Information and Systems, and Leadership.
We are in the process of completing this self-review and will be looking at ways to develop Career Education at Northcote College.
