The Peer Support Programme, Te Aka Tautoko Akonga, is a personal development programme for secondary students, led by senior students.
The programme empowers senior students to give emotional and moral encouragement to their peers. All students involved benefit from the process – peer support develops leadership skills among those providing the support and it raises the self-esteem and confidence of young students at a time when they may be vulnerable. The result is a network of personal support for NorthcoteCollege students.
Peer Support contributes to the positive school culture and environment by forging strong links and friendships between senior and junior students. By providing the opportunity for more personal and friendly contact, it reduces anti-social attitudes and behaviours among young people.
The programme gives senior students real responsibility in caring for and leading others. It equips them with interpersonal and leadership skills which are a major benefit to themselves and society.
