Start of Year 2024

Start of Year 2024

Kia ora koutou

We are excited about the year ahead and look forward to welcoming new and returning students next week. Year 9 students and peer support leaders have the school to themselves on Tuesday 30 January with a pōwhiri to start the day at 9am. All students will be here on Wednesday 31st for Day 1 of the timetable; Year 9 students begin with digital induction at 9am and students in Years 10-13 begin with a form period at 9.30am.

There are a couple of important things to note to start the year, and at the bottom of this email are key dates for the first half of Term 1.

Parent Handbook
Our Parent Handbooks have important information about our school: our values, parent portal, communications, operations, calendar dates, and more. These are available on our school website here.

Parent-Teacher-Student Meetings 22 & 27 February
We invite parents, whānau and caregivers to the first PTS meetings for the year on 22 or 27 February. These meetings are to build learning based relationships and to help us get to know our learners better. The booking system is online, and an email with the code will be sent closer to the time.

Mobile phones
We care about our students having the best learning experiences at our school; this is our priority. Some students are distracted by their mobile phones which negatively impacts their focus and learning. The government’s policy of ‘phones away for the day’ takes effect from Term 2. While we wait for more detail from the Ministry of Education, we will continue enforcing our existing phone expectation this term. The Northcote College Code of Expected Behaviour, states that: A mobile phone is a device designed for communication and quick reference, and it is expected that in the classroom, mobile phones will be turned off/on silent and be kept out of sight - unless specific permission has been given by the teacher.

Phones must be off and away in a student’s bag before they enter a classroom. If a student has their phone visible, it will be confiscated and taken to the main office for you, the parent/caregiver, to collect. Last year, we found this system supports students who are yet to develop self-management skills around appropriate phone use to make good decisions and focus fully on learning in class. Thank you for your ongoing support.

School donations, Kindo payments, uniform
We know the start of the year is an expensive time for families with requirements like stationery and uniform. Here is the link to this information on our website. We gratefully receive any uniform items donated to us and so have a limited supply of second hand uniforms, contact your child’s dean for more information. Yarnton’s in Birkenhead have a good supply of all our uniform items.

We are grateful to families who pay the school donation; without these payments we would not be able to offer the learning opportunities our students currently enjoy. All payments to Northcote College can be made in one place from the start of the term with your myKindo account. There is a link to Kindo on the top bar of our school website.

Lockers are available for students to hire. To hire a locker, students pay either $15 per term or $40 for the whole year at Harakeke | Student Reception.

Northcote College website - free via zero data portal
To encourage everyone to access school | kura websites on their mobile devices without being charged for data, the multi-agency Zero Data initiative added over 2,000 kura and school websites to the updated Zero Data portal. You can access important updates from our school, regardless of whether you have data credit or not using pasting  this link to our website. You may wish to bookmark this site for future reference. To learn more about this initiative and the many other helpful sites that are zero data, visit Zero Data Portal - New Zealand Government.

Stay in touch
Thank you in advance for your support of our school. We encourage you to stay in contact; if you have any queries, please contact your child’s Dean in the first instance.
