Health Education Delivery Statement 2025-2027
Health Education Delivery Statement 2025-2027
Our primary objective is to ensure that every student at Northcote College is able to achieve their highest possible standard in educational achievement, and that the school is a physically and emotionally safe and inclusive place for all students and staff. Health Education supports this vision and promotes positive values, respect and understanding of others, positive relationships and empowerment of ākonga to make educated, informed and positive decisions.
The Northcote College Health Programme is guided by the Ministry of Education and aligns with the New Zealand Curriculum. It is responsive to student needs and is tailored to include consideration of parent and community perspectives, as successful student learning does not occur in isolation, but rather as a local community, a city, a nation and a global community.
There are five key areas of learning: hauora (holistic wellbeing), relationships and sexuality education, food and nutrition, body care and physical safety, and staying safe online. By fostering critical thinking skills and providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment, we strengthen young people’s ability to navigate life’s challenges.
Our Junior Health Programme is combined with the Physical Education Programme, with two periods dedicated to Health and three periods allocated for P.E across our 6-day learning cycle. Health is an elective subject in Years 11, 12 and 13. The Senior Health curriculum builds on the key health concepts and expands upon them, from tackling national and global health issues to critically examining medicinal health practices.
The Northcote College Pastoral Care Programme runs for an hour a week in Term 1 for all year levels and contains focused Health lessons that reinforce the key concepts and key areas of learning. Some of the sessions for students in Year 11 and 12 are about positive relationship practices and sexual health to continue our commitment to empower our ākonga to make positive and informed decisions. These sessions are led by the outside provider BodySafe.
