Service

The school motto is ut prosim aliis which translates to mean; to be of service to others or to help others. Northcote College students support and help others in a number of ways every day.

Each year individual students receive Northcote College Service A wards in recognition of the positive contribution they have made to the wider life of the school. In 2020 students will be able to earn SVA Service Award badges by accumulating hours of service.

Student Council

Representatives are elected by students during Term 1. The Student Council meets fortnightly to discuss issues raised by students and to work on projects aimed at making Northcote College an even better place for all students. For instance the Student Council was instrumental in the design of the current uniform. The charities that benefit from Mufti Day collections and other schoolwide fundraising events are decided by the Student Council.

Peer Support Leaders

Year 12 students can apply to be a Peer Support Leader in Term 3 and undertake a two day training programme held in early December each year. Those who are selected following the training programme are allocated to Year 9 classes the following year and are instrumental in helping Year 9 students feel comfortable at their new school. Peer Support Leaders work with groups of Year 9 students every Wednesday in Term 1 helping them to make friends and understand school values and systems.

Arts Council

Senior students interested in promoting The Arts can apply for a place on the Arts Council in Term 1 each year.
This is a student led group that seeks opportunities to showcase student talent in all areas of the Arts. This includes; Spoken Word, Film-making, Stand-up Comedy, Drama, Music, Dance and Visual Art.

Sports Council

Each year the Sports Department selects a Sports Council to help promote and organise sports events. For details contact the Sports Administrator or talk to Sports Director Mr Hewson.

Cultural Council

The International Languages Department, with the help of senior language students, promotes and celebrates international language and culture. International Languages Week is organised by Language Ambassadors.

Music Leaders

The Music Department has a growing number of musicians who perform individually or as part of a group – in competitions and at lunchtimes. Music Leaders help make these performances happen.

Peer Tutors

Students interested in helping others with their learning can volunteer as a peer tutor. Peer Tutors are allocated to students requesting help and meet with them once a week in the Library, Kauri or C8 to go over tricky material.

Student Buddies

Year 9 students are invited to train as Buddies for new students who come to Northcote College part way through the year. Buddies help the new students to navigate and transition into the college as seamlessly as possible. The training provided helps enhance skills in: leadership, decision-making, problemsolving, socialisation and restorative conversations.

Tech Support Squad

Students who have an interest in computers often have the skills needed to help others who encounter IT problems. The Tech Support Squad works hard at the start of the year to help introduce new students to the school network and to iron out problems.
This group meets as needed and is sometimes involved in testing systems and making suggestions for IT system refinements schoolwide.
