Middle of Term 2 Update
Middle of Term 2 Update
Tēnā koe
We were pleased with the successful Pathway Meetings last week for students in Years 12 and 13, their whānau, and their form teachers. We are also proud of the success students are having in the winter sports season. Below are links to help you stay up to date with fixtures and results.
Please note below the important dates for the rest of this term. All schools in our Kāhui Ako have a Teacher only Day on Friday 30 May; so there are no students at school on this day. We also have two public holidays when the school is closed: King’s Birthday on Monday 2 June and Matariki on Friday 20 June.
Non-uniform Day for Abilities Group - Friday 23 May
The Student Council has decided to fundraise for the Abilities Group with a non-uniform day this Friday 23 May. Abilities Group is a recycling charity that provides employment and support to over 100 disabled people and is dedicated to protecting the environment and reducing waste. You will be aware of the devastating fire at the Abilities’ North Shore recycling plant last month. Many of our Northcote College Learning Support graduates are Abilities employees who are now without the tools or safe spaces they need to work. Donations are needed for Abilities to:
- support their disabled staff and volunteers during this time
- rebuild their workspaces and replace essential equipment
- reopen their public recycling services
We ask you to please give generously, either cash on the day or online at MyKindo; all money raised will be donated to the Abilities Group Givealittle page. You may also make your own donation directly to: https://givealittle.co.nz/org/
Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) for NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Co-requisite
We wish students well in these upcoming assessments. Please see our school website for information and links to resources: https://www.northcote.school.
- Students in Year 10 are sitting the Literacy - Reading CAA this week on Thursday 22 May. There will be no timetabled lessons on this day. There are two exam sessions (morning and afternoon), and students have been told which session they are entered in.
Morning session (be at school at 8.45am): 10BTE 10DIL 10SHN 10TOD 10VIS 10WHN
Afternoon session (be at school at 12.30pm): 10KKM 10MAC 10PTR 10RAG 10SAN 10SEN.
Students with Special Assessment Conditions have been seen by Learning Support Coordinator, Maria Mistlberger, about the time of their exam.
Students may be at home or studying in the library when not sitting the exam.
- Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 yet to achieve the co-requisite are sitting the CAAs next week on Tuesday 27, Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 May. Students know when their exams are. Timetabled lessons for seniors continue as usual on these days.

Ministry of Education Parent Portal
The ministry has launched a new Parent Portal (not to be confused with our school portal where you login to access information about your child) which is an online resource designed to support parents, caregivers, and whānau with access to up-to-date information on the curriculum, assessment practices, and ways you can complement your child’s learning.
Here is an information sheet about the ministry Parent Portal: https://drive.google.com/file/

Measles
Measles is a serious and highly infectious viral illness, which can make adults as well as children and babies very unwell. Immunisation is free and two MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) immunisations give good protection against measles. If your child has not received two MMR immunisations, please call your GP as soon as possible to book their immunisation.
Measles symptoms to be aware of:
- a high fever (over 38 C), cough, runny nose, and sore red eyes (conjunctivitis).
- a rash, beginning on the face and gradually spreading down the body to the arms and legs. The rash lasts for up to one week.
If your child is unwell, please call your GP or Healthline on 0800 611 116, as soon as symptoms appear.
The Ministry of Health requires students who have no proven immunity to measles, through immunisation or previous exposure, to be sent home if there is a measles outbreak.
Please notify the School Nurse of any confirmed cases of measles within Northcote College: 481 0141 Extn 759/ 779 or email nurse@northcote.school.nz
Education Review Office (ERO) attendance survey
Researchers at the Education Review Office (ERO) are doing some research about school attendance. They want to hear your thoughts about what makes a difference. If you can, please help by clicking on this survey link: https://survey-au.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. We encourage you to stay in contact; if you have any queries, please contact your child’s Dean in the first instance.
