1st XI football girls victory in A2 North finals
AND THE WINNERS ARE ... the Northcote College 1st XI Girls Football team!!!
The team has capped off a fabulous season with a 3-0 win over Mahurangi College 1st XI in the A2 North Grade Final.
It’s been quite the week for the team – winning their semifinal on Monday night, and taking out the victory in the final just two days later on Wednesday.
In the semi-final – played at Onepoto Domain on Monday – Northcote scored a 2-1 win over KingsWay School 1st XI in a hotly-contested match, which had been postponed from the previous week.
In a close-fought game Northcote took the lead after good work from Danni Van Geloof's good work set up Katie West on the right side for a tidy finish. Kingsway responded with an equaliser shortly before half time. Northcote were stronger in the second half, creating some good openings, but Abby Chad was denied by the crossbar and Jamie Govind by the goalkeeper with the help of the post.
The semifinal entered a 20-minute period of extra time and Northcote came out strongly and within a couple of minutes they had the lead, Abby crossing into the box and Claudia Davison heading home. They girls fought hard to maintain their advantage and ran out with a 2-1 victory.
The final was played just two days later, on Wednesday 9 August, at Northcote College in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
In a keenly-fought first half both teams had chances but it was Northcote who took a single goal advantage into half time. Claudia Davison's precise through ball was picked up by Jaime Govind who calmly rounded the visiting keeper to roll the back into the net.
The girls came out strongly in the second half and Abby Chad doubled the lead, gaining possession from one defender, before beating another and finishing into the far corner. A strong run and precise pass from the left by Rosie set Jaimie up to calmly finish for a third as Northcote began to take control.
Any threat from Mahurangi was swiftly dealt with by goalie Dani Hohaia who commanded her area expertly and she picked up Player of the Day.
It was a great 3-0 performance in front of an appreciative crowd to complete an excellent winning campaign.
