1ST XI Boys Cricket make Top 4 playoffs
1ST XI BOYS
The school cricket season resumed in earnest on Saturday October 18 – with our 1st XI Boys winning their match against Liston College, and now going into the Top 4 Playoffs.
The 1st XI Boys played their final round robin game against Liston College 1st XI at Northcote. Liston won the toss and put Northcote into bat. Two wickets well quickly before Captain Ricco Howarth (13PRB) and Joe Croll (13GRI) came together to right the ship with a partnership of 83. Joe was run out for 38, but Ricco continued to score 87 off 72 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes, a classy innings.. He had excellent support from Luca Ninzigamiye (12MFL) who made 26 and Luke Buckley (12MPH) who made 13 in vital partnerships of 57 and 35.
Northcote posted an excellent 248-9 off their 40 overs.
In reply the Liston captain Prajin Subramaniam responded to Ricco's effort with a superb innings of his own, making 75, opening the innings and being the last wicket to fall. However he had almost no support as wickets tumbled at the other end. Liston were bowled out for 107 in 20.3 overs, an excellent win by 141 runs.
For Northcote Luke Buckley took his best every figures for the 1st XI, claiming 5 for 37 off 6.3 overs. Tanmay Ghai (11STG) with 2 for 11 off 4 overs and Taine Gormly (12HUA) 2 for 25 off 4 overs were also in the wickets.
In one of those cricketing quirks, the pick of the bowlers was Riley Tyrrell (11HO) who bowled with excellent pace and control, taking 1 for 15 off 5 overs, and was a constant threat.
That meant the team finished the round robin with 6 wins from 8 games, coming 3rd. They now move into the Top 4 Playoffs, some exciting and challenging games ahead.
JUNIOR OPEN BOYS
The Junior Open Boys resumed their campaign by playing top of the table Takapuna Grammar Junior A at Takapuna Grammar.
Winning the toss and batting first, the boys achieved their first goal which was to bat their 40 overs which they did, making 160-9.
Het Baraiya (10PTR) a new arrival from Lynfield College, top scored with a stylish 36, and others to make significant scores were Clark Wilson (10PTR) 35, Braydon Puddle (10TOD) 17 and Liam Duggan (10KKM) 16.
Caelan Scott (9LEE) and Liam Abbot (9MKE) each grabbed an early wicket to threaten an upset, but a superb 112 from the Takapuna Grammar opener scored at a furious rate soon dispelled that idea. Liam Duggan (10KKM) finally dismissed him while bowling very well, taking 1 for 15 off 5 overs.
However Takapuna Grammar reached 161-3 off 18.2 overs to win by 7 wickets.
