An amazing evening under the stars
Northcote College were honoured to host hundreds of guests from local schools and our wider community as we celebrated Matariki recently with An Evening Under the Stars. Audiences packed the school hall for kapa haka performances from Northcote Primary, Northcote Intermediate, and Northcote College.
A traditional dinner of hangi or vegetable soup followed – perfect for a chilly (but thankfully dry!) winter’s evening. We launched a wonderful fundraising collection of Matariki earrings and necklaces, and our Year 13 business students also had stands with their wares.
The evening was rounded out with arts and crafts for the kids, and a selection of workshops for everyone. Thak you to Teira Tohu for their kōrero about the Matariki stars in the ‘stellarium’; Teina Kirikiri and Shaunee Hiha, who explained Te Kapahu Wheu (the Māori star compass); Kiriana O’Connell for the mahi rarangi flax weaving workshop; and Stan Conrad on Polynesian sailing and wayfinding.
